Black Sesame 'Kurogoma' - Sesame indicum

Black Sesame seeds are much esteemed by sushi lovers. They're hard to find in stores, but easy to grow. Very decorative, they are also extremely nutritious.

Sesame has been cultivated for over 5,000 years for its nutritious, tasty seeds. Originally from tropical Africa, it was brought to the United States in the 1600s by African slaves. It thrives anywhere cotton can be grown, and that includes your garden.

Sesame grows 3' to 5' tall. The flowers resemble pink foxgloves that turn into fat little pods. Each contains 50-100 seeds.

This warm season annual does best in areas with a long growing season. It needs full sun, well-drained soil, grows well alongside sweet corn. Once established, it's fairly drought tolerant. In warm zones 9-10, sow it right where you want it. In cooler regions, start the seed indoors and plant them out after the last frost.
