Kalanchoe thyrsiflora - Flapjack Plant
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is an exotic succulent from South Africa. Its sculptural form and vibrant colors make it a standout in any desert garden. It's amazing in a container or tucked between rocks.
A cluster looks like some deep sea creature or a stack of colorful plates stacked on end. The 6" smooth round leaves are dusty blue-green with coral edges. In bright light the margins glow red. This is one of the showiest plants in any succulent garden, beautiful when planted en masse. Over time, it forms a lovely clump.
Kalanchoe grows anywhere in zone 9-11, needs bright light, sandy soil, little water. It grows in full sun to partial shade. The brighter the light conditions, the brighter the red leaf colors. A pot on a sunny windowsill works just fine.
The leaves always point upward toward the sun to minimize surface area. This is one smart, very drought-tolerant plant.
