Lathyrus latifolius - Everlasting Pink Pea

If you love sweet peas, but always forget to plant them, toss some of these seeds into a crummy patch of soil and you'll have them forever.

Sweet peas have been cultivated since the 17th century. This bright pink Mediterranean native may be the granddaddy of them all. A hardy perennial, it isn't fragrant, but produces masses of bright pink flowers all summer, excellent for covering slopes, embankments and unsightly objects, and you only need to plant it once.

Everlasting Pea grows almost anywhere there's sunshine and water, zones 3-9. Give it something to climb on and it will grow to 8' or more. Deciduous in winter, it's a profuse re-seeder, and will come back with the first spring rains. Despite its lack of pedigree (it IS a wildflower), The Royal Horticultural Society has recognized its outstanding excellence with the prestigious Award of Garden Merit. This is a terrific plant.
