Phyteuma scheuchzeri - Horned Rampion
Horned Rampion is an excellent rock garden plant that is much loved in Europe, but rarely seen here. Spiky purple clusters sprout out of low mounds of blue-green leaves. Bizarre, but charming.
This vibrant perennial grows wild in the Alps and is a natural for rockeries. It likes moist soil with good drainage, sun or part shade, and cool weather. It's hardy in zones 6-8, even colder with protection or good winter snow cover. The seeds are microscopic. Most easily sown in late fall, they can be planted in spring if stratified. We're sending a pinch, at least 200 seeds. If your weather has already warmed up, wrap them in a moist paper towel and store in the fridge for a few weeks before planting.
