Datura metel fastuosa - Purple Datura
Daturas are fat desert plants with furry leaves, deep purple stems, and ruffled white and lilac blooms. The fragrant blossoms open at night and are gorgeous in the moonlight.
Plants grow quickly from seed and thrive in crummy soil with little water. They're annuals and will grow anywhere. These triples are fancy enough to show off in a container and tough enough to grow in a vacant lot.
Soak the seeds, then plant them, barely cover with soil and keep barely moist. A clear plastic cover helps. They can be slow to germinate, but all should come up. They love summer heat.
All parts of Datura are toxic. Do not eat.
