Dombeya burgessiae, Hydrangea Tree, 5 seeds
A blooming Dombeya will stop you in your tracks! Fat clusters of fragrant pink bells dangle beneath huge velvety leaves. They resemble hydrangea blossoms, smell like jasmine, and even after they fade they stay on the tree, a soft beige that makes for great dried arrangements. The leaves are enormous and create lovely summer shade.
Dombeya grows quickly into a fat shrub or a 15' tree that fits nicely into most gardens. Native to Madagascar, it's evergreen in warm zones 9-11, will survive a brief freeze, but does best in a container if your winters are cool. It loves full sun, isn't fussy about soil, and is drought-tolerant once established. This is a spectacular plant, quite rare, and very easy to grow.
Seeds need light to germinate. Keep them warm and moist and they should pop up within three weeks.
