Olea europeana - Olive Tree

$3.99

Olive trees have been treasured forever. They are naturally gorgeous, low maintenance, drought tolerant, and bear copious, delicious, healthy fruit. Some Italian olive trees date back to Roman times. They're still producing excellent fruit.

This gnarly tree has silvery leaves, peeling grey bark, a twisty trunk. Fragrant, white flowers appear in summer, and are followed by (drum roll) olives. They'll need to be pickled in brine before you eat them, but they're worth the effort.

Evergreen and hardy in mild climates down to 16 degrees F (Zone 8), it is a good subject for bonsai anywhere. It is short and squat, and rarely exceeds 8–15 meters in height.

They prefer alkaline soil, but will grow in any soil with good drainage. They tolerate drought well, thanks to their sturdy and extensive root system.
This tree is a treasure.
