Agave attentuata - Fox Tail Agave

$3.29

Fox Tail Agave is soft, non-spiny, and safe to plant around walkways and children. It's a pleasant blue-green that fits in with non-desert plants and makes a handsome architectural statement in an otherwise leafy garden. Or plant it in with your cactus.

Eventually growing to 4' to 5' tall and wide, with clusters of pups tucked under its leaves, Agave attenuata is best planted where it can spread out. Pups are easily removed, but the cluster is quite striking. Mature plants send up a 10' tall flower stalk that swoops back to the ground like a gooseneck, crazy! Tiny pale green flowers become many new plantlets that can be plucked off the stem and rooted. This is a plant that fascinates children.

Native to Mexico, this is a tropical agave, prefers partial shade to scorching sun, is frost sensitive, and looks best with regular water. Hardy down to 28 degrees, it's easy outdoors in zones 9-11, can be grown on a windowsill elsewhere or as a patio plant to be wintered indoors. Foxtail Agave is slow-growing and will fit on your windowsill quite a long time.

Surface sow, covering with a light layer of soil.  Cover pot with plastic wrap and a rubber band to keep in heat and moisture.  Place in a warm, sunny location, keep soil moist, but not soaking wet.  Remove plastic wrap when you have seedlings.
